Mortuary Science Occupation Applications Now Open

Full and provisional licensure applications for mortuary science occupations, including Mortuary Science Practitioners, Funeral Directors, Embalmers, Cremationists, and Natural Reductionists are now open.

While licensure is not required until January 1, 2027, individuals may choose to apply early. Full licenses will be valid until November 30, 2027, while provisional licenses will be valid for three years from the date of issuance.

Senate Bill 24-173 established both provisional and full licensure requirements for mortuary science occupations. The bill was introduced following a Sunrise Review by the Colorado Office of Policy, Research, and Regulatory Reform, which recommended regulation for these professions.

Provisional licenses are designed to allow individuals currently practicing in the industry an opportunity to demonstrate competency and obtain full licensure. Individuals can meet qualifications for provisional licensure through a combination of experience and sign-off by qualified professionals in the field.

An individual is eligible for a full license upon completion of the provisional process or upon meeting the requirements for full licensure, which are outlined in the Consumer Guide to Death Care in Colorado (see page seven).

Specific application requirements are available within the Funeral and Mortuary Sciences Licensing Guide.
