The Colorado Office of Funeral and Mortuary Science Services (Program) regulates funeral homes and crematories in the State of Colorado. Program activities include registration of funeral homes and crematories, investigation of complaints, and enforcement of disciplinary actions against those who violate the Mortuary Science Code and the Office of Funeral and Mortuary Science Services Rules. The Program's mission is to maintain the profession's integrity and protect its consumers. Several changes to the program are being considered by the Colorado General Assembly through House Bill 24-1335.
Several changes to the program were recently made by the Colorado General Assembly through House Bill 24-1335. This bill was signed into law on May 24, 2024.
Senate Bill 24-173, which was signed into law on May 24, 2024, mandates regulation of Mortuary Science Practitioners, Funeral Directors, Embalmers, Cremationists, and Natural Reductionists by January 1, 2027.

- 2009: Licensure requirements for Funeral Homes and Crematories are established.
- 2025/ 2027: In 1913, the State Board of Embalmers was created. In 1939, the name is changed to the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers; then, in 1967, it is again changed to the Board of Mortuary Science. In 1983, this board was terminated, as was the licensing of Funeral Directors - the rest continued under the Mortuary Science Code. More recently, HB24-173 created a licensure structure for Mortuary Science Practitioners, Funeral Directors, Embalmers, Cremationists and Natural Reductionists. Licensure opened on 5/19/25, but is not required until 1/1/27.
