Welcome to the Nursing Homepage

The State Board of Nursing is responsible for enforcing statutes, rules and policies as implemented by the Nurse Practice Act, Nurse Aide Practice Act, and the Licensed Psychiatric Technician Practice Act. Board staff oversee education, licensing, and enforcement of nurses, nurse aides, and licensed psychiatric technicians. The State Board of Nursing oversees more than 110,000 licensees.

Permanent Rulemaking Hearing – October 23, 2024

The purpose of this Rulemaking Hearing is for the Board to decide on proposed revisions to Rule 1.9 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE IN RELATION TO IV AUTHORITY – The purpose is to determine whether the Rule is needed and to clarify the definition of premixed and administration of IV antibiotics; Rule 1.12 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR APPROVAL OF MEDICATION AIDE TRAINING PROGRAMS (revision to Rule 1.12 C.6 or add a waiver to Rule 1.12) – The purpose is to address the need for long term care facilities on the Medicare/Medicaid loss list to be able to host medication aide training; Rule 1.14 – RULES AND REGULATIONS TO REGISTER PROFESSIONAL NURSES QUALIFIED TO ENGAGE IN ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSING – The purpose is to edit the Rule; Rule 1.15 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR PRESCRIPTIVE AUTHORITY FOR ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSES – The purpose is to clarify the mentorship requirement for APRNs applying for prescriptive authority; Rule 1.18 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE IN RELATION TO MEDICATION AIDE AUTHORITY – The purpose is to come into compliance with the portability act; Rule 1.28 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR LICENSURE OF CERTIFIED MIDWIVES; and Rule 1.29 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR PRESCRIPTIVE AUTHORITY FOR CERTIFIED MIDWIVES – The purpose is to clarify the rules and to be consistent with Statute.

 

Stakeholder Meeting – August 16, 2024

The purpose of this Stakeholder Meeting is for the Board to receive feedback on proposed revisions to Rule 1.9 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE IN RELATION TO IV AUTHORITY; Rule 1.14 – RULES AND REGULATIONS TO REGISTER PROFESSIONAL NURSES QUALIFIED TO ENGAGE IN ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSING; Rule 1.15 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR PRESCRIPTIVE AUTHORITY FOR ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSES; Rule 1.18 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE IN RELATION TO MEDICATION AIDE AUTHORITY; Rule 1.28 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR LICENSURE OF CERTIFIED MIDWIVES; and Rule 1.29 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR PRESCRIPTIVE AUTHORITY FOR CERTIFIED MIDWIVES.

Additionally, the Board is seeking feedback on several questions to stakeholders with respect to Rule 1.12 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR APPROVAL OF MEDICATION AIDE TRAINING PROGRAMS. The questions presented for stakeholder feedback relate to the interaction between approved or prospective Medication Aide training programs and certain requirements with respect to Medicare and Medicaid

Permanent and Emergency Rulemaking Hearing Notice – September 20, 2023

The Colorado Board of Nursing held a Permanent and Emergency Rulemaking Hearing to consider adopting a new Rule 1.35 (RULES AND REGULATIONS REGARDING GENERALLY ACCEPTED STANDARDS OF NURSING PRACTICE REGARDING PREGNANCY-RELATED SERVICES) to implement Colorado Senate Bill 23-190(opens in new window) (Concerning Policies to Make Punishable Deceptive Actions Regarding Pregnancy-Related Services).

Joint Stakeholder Meeting - Opioid Guidelines - July 17, 2023

The Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, Colorado Dental Board, Colorado Medical Board, Colorado State Board of Nursing, Colorado State Board of Optometry, Colorado Podiatry Board, and Colorado State Board of Veterinary Medicine are holding a virtual Stakeholder Meeting on July 17, 2023, for stakeholders to provide feedback regarding Colorado’s Guidelines for the Safe Prescribing and Dispensing of Opioids as these guidelines relate to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) updated Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain.
